I've started a speaker series called "Project Heart Safe", geared to bringing knowledge and awareness to all women about a rare heart attack that is affecting women between the ages of 30-55. The heart attack is becoming more and more common as women are becoming more active, ambitious and independent in their lives. This particular heart attack stems from "stress only" which afflicts all women who live full lives. This heart attack is often mistaken and misdiagnosed as just being anxiety disorder or having panic attacks, when it's actually a heart attack coming on. The mission of "Project Heart Safe" is to put on several speaker series events to give information about the symptoms and prevention of such a heart attack. I actually suffered this heart attack 8 months ago, one week before my 40th birthday. I vow to be a vehicle in which to prevent this deadly disease from happening to any other woman. Along with the speaker series, I plan on having several art exhibits with artwork inspired by my experience and journey back to health.
Yvonne works for The Museum Of Fine Arts Houston teaching art workshops for children and adults and also teaches art to children through City Art Works.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Yvonne is a visual artist, poet and short story writer."My art is an expression of the many facets of my life. I draw inspiration from images, dreams, visions, memories, real-life events and the connection I have with other beings in the world. I'm mostly a self-taught artist. Every piece I create has not been without the struggle of having to learn something new. I believe this is the beauty of my artistic exploration. Each body of work I create is a direct truth of the "influences" of many things in my life. Past present and within me. The journeys I've taken and the people I've come across have left a piece of themselves with me, as a gift of inspiration. My hope is that my audience will be touched by my work and possibly find their own inspirations".
